Each year for the past 12 years staff within Psychology in the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies at MMU Cheshire have run a student conference. The conference has all the same features of a national or international conference but it also forms a large percentage of third year student final assessment. Third year students present their final project and their findings to their peers and a team of three Psychology staff who assess and moderate the presentation.
Feedback from students suggests that it one of their best assessments. Nick Lund thinks there are two reasons for this. Firstly, it forms part of the students social calendar. It is the last activity they do on the course together with their peers. Secondly, it is the stage at which they realise their professional identify; they feel like psychologists because they are the 'experts of the day' and this is a great boost to their confidence.
